Refrigeration system history

February 8th, 2010

In 1758, Benjamin Franklin and John Hadley, professor of chemistry at Cambridge University, conducted an experiment to explore the principle of evaporation as a means to rapidly cool an object. Franklin and Hadley confirmed that evaporation of highly volatile liquids such as alcohol and ether, could be used to drive down the temperature of an object past the freezing point of water. They conducted their experiment with the bulb of a mercury thermometer as their object and with a bellows used to “quicken” the evaporation; they lowered the temperature of the thermometer bulb down to 7°F while the ambient temperature was 65°F.

Franklin noted that soon after they passed the freezing point of water (32°F) a thin film of ice formed on the surface of the thermometer’s bulb and that the ice mass was about a quarter inch thick when they stopped the experiment upon reaching 7°F. Franklin concluded, “From this experiment, one may see the possibility of freezing a man to death on a warm summer’s day”

In 1805, American inventor Oliver Evans designed but never built a refrigeration system based on the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle rather than chemical solutions or volatile liquids such as ethyl ether.

In 1820, the British scientist Michael Faraday liquefied ammonia and other gases by using high pressures and low temperatures.

An American living in Great Britain, Jacob Perkins, obtained the first patent for a vapor-compression refrigeration system in 1834. Perkins built a prototype system and it actually worked, although it did not succeed commercially.

In 1842, an American physician, John Gorrie, designed the first system for refrigerating water to produce ice. He also conceived the idea of using his refrigeration system to cool the air for comfort in homes and hospitals (i.e., air-conditioning). His system compressed air, then partially cooled the hot compressed air with water before allowing it to expand while doing part of the work required to drive the air compressor. That isentropic expansion cooled the air to a temperature low enough to freeze water and produce ice, or to flow “through a pipe for effecting refrigeration otherwise” as stated in his patent granted by the U.S. Patent Office in 1851. Gorrie built a working prototype, but his system was a commercial failure.

Alexander Twining began experimenting with vapor-compression refrigeration in 1848 and obtained patents in 1850 and 1853. He is credited with having initiated commercial refrigeration in the United States by 1856.

Widespread commercial refrigeration use

By the 1870s breweries had become the largest users of commercial refrigeration units, though some still relied on harvested ice. Though the ice-harvesting industry had grown immensely by the turn of the 20th century, pollution and sewage had begun to creep into natural ice making it a problem in the metropolitan suburbs. Eventually breweries began to complain of tainted ice. This raised demand for more modern and consumer-ready refrigeration and ice-making machines. In 1895, German engineer Carl von Linde set up a large-scale process for the production of liquid air and eventually liquid oxygen for use in safe household refrigerators.

Refrigerated railroad cars were introduced in the US in the 1840s for the short-run transportation of dairy products. In 1867 J.B. Sutherland of Detroit, Michigan patented the refrigerator car designed with ice tanks at either end of the car and ventilator flaps near the floor which would create a gravity draft of cold air through the car.

By 1900 the meat packing houses of Chicago had adopted ammonia-cycle industrial refrigeration. By 1914 almost every location used artificial refrigeration. The big meat packers, Armour, Swift, and Wilson, had purchased the most expensive units which they installed on train cars and in branch houses and storage facilities in the more remote distribution areas.

It was not until the middle of the 20th century that refrigeration units were designed for installation on tractor-trailer rigs (trucks or lorries). Refrigerated vehicles are used to transport perishable goods, such as frozen foods, fruit and vegetables, and temperature-sensitive chemicals. Most modern refrigerators keep the temperature between -40 and +20 °C and have a maximum payload of around 24 000 kg. gross weight (in Europe).

Being Aware of Ginseng Side Effects

February 7th, 2010

Products that can help improve overall good health may be what many consumers are looking for these days. It is best that consumers consider ginseng side effects before they add this herb to their daily routine. Having knowledge of the benefits will have some consumers purchasing this product but as with any supplement or over the counter remedy it is important to understand side effects and warnings. Reading the label of the product may list some side effects, other individuals may choose to talk to a health care provider and some consumers may choose to research the side effects on line.

When choosing to purchase this herb in tea or capsule form many shoppers will want to check to see which form of the herb they are purchasing. Also reading the side effects of the product they are purchasing will help shoppers know exactly what symptoms to look for. Each type of this herb may have different side effects to look for. It is also important to follow the directions of the amount of the herb to take daily. When taking more than they suggested amount it could lead to an overdose of the herb that may have different symptoms. Though it will vary from person to person if they experience ginseng side effects or not knowing about them will help recognize them if they do happen. But for many people the benefits may outweigh the side effects they experience.

There are several side effects that may be common however they may not be as serious as other side effects that some individuals have experienced. Some of the most common of these symptoms have included headaches, diarrhea, loss of appetite and difficulty sleeping. Also some women have noticed breast pain while taking this herb supplement. If these symptoms worsen individuals may want to talk to their health care provider about continuing or discontinuing the use of this supplement. Assuming that herbs and natural supplements are safe to take because they are all natural are not exactly accurate. In fact for most people checking with their health care provider before they do take one of these natural products will give the consumer all the valuable information they need regarding their individual situation. For those who do take this herbal supplement there are a few ginseng side effects that may require medical attention and should be reported to the health care provider immediately. Some of these side effects include rapid heart rates, hypoglycemia, heart palpitations, low or high blood pressure and vaginal bleeding may require the individual to have immediate health care. There are a few other symptoms to watch for that may indicate that the individual’s blood is not clotting appropriately.

Those individuals who become easy to bruise, nosebleeds or bleeding that is not easily stopped will also want to contact their health care provider immediately. Signs of vomiting blood and blood in the stool as well as stroke symptoms make require an immediate phone call to 911 or a trip to the emergency room. Knowing ginseng side effects will have those individuals experiencing the benefits aware of the potential harm if the symptoms go untreated. As with any new medication or supplement being aware of symptoms of an allergic reaction are important to be aware of. When a person is allergic to this herbal supplement they may experience rash, hives, itching and mouth or throat swelling, when this happens getting immediate health care is critical. Those knowing the ginseng side effects will know what to look for and if they do not experience them they will be able to experience the help this herb can bring for overall good health.

The Benefits of Home Massage Devices

February 5th, 2010

Massage Therapy can be very helpful for experiencing muscle pain and rigidity, but it costs a lot to see a massage therapist on a regular basis. Some of the same benefits can be had by consumers through the use of electronic massagers. The quality on these machines has only gone up over the years, and you can now easily get a top notch automated massage experience in your home.

Muscle pain is among the most common complaints that a physician hears about from his patients. Usually, these symptoms are completely normal. They are simply the result of living your life. But all that pain can very well interfere with your enjoyment of your life.

Therapeutic massage is clearly one of the quickest ways to get yourself up and around again. It can be an effective way to reduce the pain and help you move about normally again. Many patients also find it to be extraordinarily relaxing and restorative. Naturally, it goes without saying that you should check with your doctor beforehand to make sure that there is no illness underlying the doscomfort you have been feeling. And then as soon as you hear back from your doctor that you are in good health, massage may be the solution to your problems.

The problem is that a professional massage is too expensive for many people to justify, especially in a down economy. If you are in need of frequent intensive massage, the bills can really add up. The good news is, a lot of people find that home massage equipment is almost as good. I’m particularly thinking about: TheraSpa Turbo Brookstone Massager

Handheld massage therapy equipment range from small handheld and portable massagers that apply basic percussive pressure, to costlier machines that massage specific body parts. For example, there are dedicated massagers for the head and neck, massage devices for the foot and calf, or back massage pads. Although certain people may feel oppressed by the initial expense of the highest quality home massage machines, you will find that these machines can pay for themselves pretty quickly when you end up going to the masseuse less frequently. One example is here: Portable Massage Chairs

The best method that you can determine whether a certain make and model of massager is going to work for you is to try it out. A select few showrooms provide access to working machines for you to put to work on your own aches and pains to see whether the type of massage a given machine provides will help you with your specific trouble. If there are no showrooms in your area, you will have to rely on internet reviewers to see whether people with pain that is similar to your are responding well to the device, and surmise in that way whether or not a massager may be able to help you with your problems.

Getting a Job as a Web Designer in Brisbane Australia

February 4th, 2010

So you want to work in a web design company in Brisbane? This article gives you useful tips and advice for all would-be web designers in Australia’s most livable city.

The web design employment market is very crowded in Australia, as it is in most countries. Not only do you have fully qualified people looking for jobs, but you also have self taught enthusiasts and those who think being able to edit a Facebook page means they can be called web designers. Fortunately there is also a high demand for web design so new career opportunities are springing up all the time.

One of the big choices that you have to make when looking for a employment in web design is do you want to work in a small or large firm. In Brisbane we have a good mixture of these two types, so there is plenty of choice.

Let’s look at the relative advantages and disadvantages of working for small or large firm.

Small Firms

Small firms offer the advantage of a high level of variation in work. One day you may be making simple edits to a web site the next you might be designing a site from scratch. Another advantage that you might find is that you are able to effect the strategy and direction of the design firm. If it’s a small team your views will be heard and your decisions will make a difference. Of course this can lead to higher levels of responsibility and therefore stress, but at least you’ll feel in control of your own destiny. You will have to be prepared to use a wide range of skills in a small firm, if you only know Dreamweaver then a small firm is probably not the place for you, but if you are happy to jump into Photoshop, think nothing of setting up an FTP connection and know your way around Flash, you might feel right at home.

Disadvantages of working for a small firm include the amount of relatively menial tasks that may have to be performed. For example you might be hoping to test your design skills to the full and feel disappointed to be doing text updates or admin tasks. The lack of a structure at work may also be frustrating; an ‘all hands on deck’ approach is often used in small firms.

From a monetary point of view working in a small firm can be good and bad. Many small firms are cash strapped and can’t match the salaries of the big firms, but they can experience far higher growth. Your input could result in a small firm’s output increasing substantial and potentially upping your salary. My advice would be to negotiate some kind of profit sharing or commission incentive; it’ll help you get more dollars in your pocket and keep you focused and on your toes.

Large Firms

It can often appear quite glamorous; flash offices, big clients, impressive colleagues. And it is true that you will probably be exposed to the higher end of the market, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be wining and dining clients and working on the glitziest projects all the time. Starting out in a large firm often means starting low and working your way up, so be prepared to do the hard yards. The ability for you to make decisions and to affect the company’s direction will almost certainly be limited compared to working in a small firm.

The large firms can often afford to pay web designers very well and in the right place your skills and talents should be noticed and rewarded, but perhaps not as quickly as in a small firm. Larger firms can also allow for a greater degree of specialisation, you may have responsibility for just one special element of web design. Whether this is seen as an advantage or not will be an indicator as to your suitability for life with the big boys.

Brisbane’s Choice

In Brisbane we have a wide range of web development firms that can be seen as potential employers. The larger companies tend to be in the CBD and you will have to make appointments either with the human resources department or via a recruitment firm. Sending a resume in will not do any harm especially if you include examples of your work.

I would recommend avoiding the very smallest of firms as these are often home office type setups and may not be run very professionally. The next step up are the small firms with offices or shops, of these I would chose the most visibly and active, after all you don’t want to work in dingy back office with no new clients.

Look in the areas of Brisbane known for creative industries; these include Woolloongabba, West End and the Valley. Have a walk around and get a feel for the how the firms look and how busy they seem. Don’t be afraid to pop in and have chat.

BA Creative is a small Brisbane web development firm with a lovely shop in Woolloongabba. Pop in to talk about great web design. Peter Accini is the Creative Director of BA Creative a boutique design firm (web, print, signage, anything) with offices in Brisbane and Melbourne. The Brave New World of Web 2.0

February 4th, 2010

Having been a traditional bricks and mortar business owner for the past 20 years or so I’m quickly realizing that this Web 2.0 stuff is radically changing the landscape of how business is done worldwide. It used to that finding customers was just a matter of making some cold calls, passing out a few business cards and maybe writing an ad for your local newspaper. But with some much competition out there now these so called old marketing methods just aren’t cutting it any more.

At first I was a little hesitate to jump into the whole internet Web 2.0 thing, I’ve never been the techie type but have always been intrigued by the internet and the infinite possibilities of how this tool could be used to market a business. So being the slow starter that I’ve always been I decided to take the plunge and educate myself for a couple of months to see what types of results that could gained by using this new marketing medium. And boy was I surprised after about six months or so of testing by way of a blog, several videos and submitting a couple of niche articles to some of the top article directories.

Well it’s been close to a year now and even though I wouldn’t consider myself a guru or anything like that I have become quite proficient in two maybe three areas of Web 2.0 marketing. It’s a brave new world out here now folks and my advice to any of you traditional old timers out there is don’t be afraid to give the internet a shot. It’s becoming extremely easier and easier to take advantage of what Web 2.0 and the internet has to offer, so do yourself a favor and don’t get left behind. This is Kevin Thomas hope you enjoyed reading this article.

Do I Find A Birth Injury Lawyer To Aid With A Birth Injury Claim?

February 4th, 2010

When a infant is born, it is every parent’s wish and prayer that the infant will arrive into the world in a perfect form, with every one of the tools the baby requires to grow up to be a content and productive element of humanity. Thankfully, most children and their mothers journey it through the worrying birthing process with extremely few, if any, inconveniences. Although for a minority, what ought be a joyful moment usually finishes inheartbreak: their baby has a considerable physical blemish or injury.

On occasion the birth injury is not clear straight after after the baby is born, but more readily they are discovered soon after when thebaby is not developing correctly in whichever motor skills or perhaps even the child is not developing cognitively as it ought to. One condition which can happen from such injury which may occur to a child throughout childbirth if the doctor does something wrong is cerebral palsy. A child can also have rigorous bone fractures, brain damage or even catch a serious infection if the physician gets careless during the birth process.

A Birth Injury Lawyer or a birth injury attorney only become involved during a birth injury if it happens as a result of carelessness or improper treatment by surgeons. Although the discovery of innate birth defects in a child could be sad and stressful for the family, these are unfortunate natural occurrences and are thus not argument for proceedings. In other words, if your child was born with a aperture in the heart, has Down’s Syndrome, or other severe birth defects that were not caused by the care given by a medical professional at the time of the birth, sourcing a birth injury lawyer or birth injury attorneys will probably do little to no good.

7 Million More Households are Participating in Vegetable Growing!

February 4th, 2010

According to the National Gardening Association’s 2009 Impact of Home and Community Gardening In America report, 7 million more households are participating in home vegetable gardening, as well as fruit, herbs and berry cultivation this year, compared to last. This means that 37% of all US households are doing some of their own food production. The number of home gardeners has increased 19%, compared to just 10% from 2007-2008. “More Americans are recognizing the benefits of growing their own produce, including improved quality, taste and cost savings,” the NGA report concludes.

So just who are all these new gardeners? “The demographics of today’s food gardening households include a broad cross-section of the U.S. population. There are few other outdoor activities where virtually every demographic group is so well represented, no matter what their age, education, income, marital status, household size, gender, or regional location,” concludes the NGA report. The food gardening experience is enjoyed primarily by women (54%), those ages 45+ (68%), college students (43%) and married couples with no children at home (67%). The gardeners are pretty evenly spread across the South, Midwest, West and Northeast. Those making $35,000 - $49,999 in household income are the most common gardening group (24%), although many who make over $75,000 (22%), under $35,000 (21%) and between $50,000 and $74,999 (16%) are also represented.

Among active home gardeners, 11% say they’ll increase the amount and variety of vegetables they’re growing in 2010, as well as share more of their produce with others. About 10% say they’ll spend more time on their gardens and do more preserving this year. Of the 21% of households who are beginning their first gardens, 11% say they’ll start by growing herbs, 10% say they’ll start with vegetable container gardening, 5% are beginning a full backyard vegetable garden and 4% will try their hand at berry growing.

Today’s home gardeners have been growing food for 12 years on average, and they spend about five hours per week on their gardens. Twenty percent of those surveyed say this is their first year growing plants, while 39% said they’ve been gardening for 1-5 years. Some gardeners spend over 20 hours in their gardens each week, but the norm seems to be closer to 3-5 hours. Surprisingly, 43% of respondents said they spend less than two hours in their gardens. An estimated 5 million households are “extremely” or “very” interested in having a garden plot in a community garden located near their homes. Is communal gardening the way of the future? The National Gardening Association seems to think so. Many people believe that locally grown food can deliver safer, fresher and better quality produce.

A short credit note about Stuart Downing, the Author of this Article:

Stuart is a long term keen gardener. Both Stuart and his wife spend many hours a week in the garden. To relax, Stuart enjoys blogging about gardening issues and is an active member of many of the most popular gardening forums.
